The Journalist: an Invisible Translator?

This type of intervention is related to three main tasks that are assumed as part of the process of translation. First, a task of selection and synthesis, through which only that information which is considered to be relevant is rendered in the target language. Second, a task of prioritization of information, through which the original text is adapted to the needs of the new audience. Third, a task of changing news angles and nuances, when the new informative context justi?es it. The possibility of changing news angles in order to better ful?lthe needs and expectations of a di?erent audience pushes the very notion of equivalence to its limit, revealing how di?erent versions of global news events can function in very diverse local contexts. The translator's visibility and transformative role in news production is directly related to this power to actually change the prevalent news angle or point of view from which events are narrated in order to produce a new text which can function more e?ectively as news for a di?erent public.

With respect to news agency production, there emerges in this context an important paradox between the need to harmonize criteria in the di?erent newswires so that they respond to a consistent editorial politics of the organization as a whole, and the need to adapt to cultural, geographic and linguistic di?erence. A news agency needs to present a coherent vision of the world in spite of linguistic and regional di?erences, and daily coordination between the regions is destined to ensure the prevalence of this unity of focus, which is permanently threatened by the constant generation of urgent information. However, on the other hand, the emphasis and news angle that prevail in each region are determined by local circumstances, and need to be tailored to each speci?ccontext in order to make texts successfully function as news. This paradox is at the very core of this kind of global organization which also maintains a local presence in many countries and ultimately very di?cult to resolve.

Agood example of arising con?icts with respect to news angle arose with the coverage of Ronald Reagan's funeral during ?eldwork at AFP's Montevideo regional centre. English-language notes from Washington were translated at this o?ce and the divergence was clearly visible when articles celebrating and praising the life and achievements of a respected head of state had to be rendered in Spanish, in a region where this ?gure, associated with one of the most aggressive periods of US foreign policy and the dirty wars in Central America, has sinister connotations. In this context, adding background information related to Reagan’seconomic policies and to his participation in the wars in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala was much more signi?cant to the Latin American media reader than narrating the ex-president's last look of love to his wife.

In spite of constant coordination and, maybe even more signi?cantly, of the growing in?uence of Anglophone journalism in news agencies, continuing di?erences of style and content, of focus and priority prevail in their di?erent newswires. The task of news translation is one of successfully dealing with these di?erences while, at the same time, making it possible that information can successfully circulate across linguistic, cultural and geographical boundaries.
