學(xué)不可以已。青取之于藍(lán),而青于藍(lán);冰,水為之,而寒于水。君子博學(xué)而日參省乎己,則知明而行無(wú)過矣。There is never an end to learning. The dye extracted from the indigo is bluer than the plant; so is the ice colder than the water. By broadly learning and constantly examining himself every day,the gentleman sharpens his awareness and makes fewer mistakes.

學(xué)而不思則罔,思而不學(xué)則殆。Learning without thinking leads to confusion;thinking without learning ends in danger.

學(xué)而不厭,誨人不倦。Never be contented with your study. Never be impatient with your teaching.

學(xué)如逆水行舟,不進(jìn)則退。Learning is like rowing upstream:not to advance is to drop back.

言近而指遠(yuǎn)者,善言也;守約而施博者,善道也。It is a good speech that talks near but signifies far; it is a good way that operates restrictedly but applies widely.

言之無(wú)文,行而不遠(yuǎn)。Words without content will not reach far and wide.

尊嚴(yán)而憚,可以為師;耆艾而信,可以為師;誦說而不陵不犯,可以 為師;知微而論,可以為師;故師術(shù)有四,而博習(xí)不與焉。He who is dignified and respectable can be a teacher; he who is aged and trustworthy can be a teacher; he who can explain the classics without excess or distortion can be a teacher; he who knows the profundity and speaks systematically can be a teacher. Hence four kinds of men can make teachers, and a man with merely a broad knowledge is not among them.
